Be wary of their new dentist, Dr. Abbasi. Long story short she was trying to fill TWO cavities that other dentists (who are very well-known and trusted in this area and have been for years) said didn’t exist. Here’s the long story: I went to Blacksburg Smiles in December and Dr. Abbasi (the new dentist) told me I had 2 small cavities on the upper left side, so they scheduled for them to be filled in the Spring. I’ve never had cavities before and another dental office 6 months prior did X-rays which showed no decay. Blacksburg Smiles cancelled the filling appointment the morning of (I think because of staffing issues?) and rescheduled me for a couple months later at their earliest appointment slot. Since Dr. Abbasi had this attitude that it was super urgent I get them filled, I went to another dentist in the area that could fill them sooner, and THANK GOODNESS I did. The other dental practice had two separate dentists look at the X-rays that Blacksburg Smiles sent over and even did new X-rays free of charge because they couldn’t find anything on my teeth that needed to be filled. The one couldn’t find any decay and the other said there was a tiny, TINY bit of decay on the surface of the tooth (which technically isn’t even a cavity because a cavity is when the decay goes down to the middle part of the tooth which is why you have to fill it) that couldn’t be seen at one x-ray angle but was barely visible at another angle. He said it wasn’t worth inflicting harm on the teeth to fill, especially since I’ve never had a cavity before and it’s unlikely to get bigger. Not sure if Dr. Abbasi was trying to scam me or just isn’t a good dentist (she told me personally she has 20 years of experience) or maybe there’s another reason but I would get a second opinion before letting her do anything to your teeth. I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt here but the way she acted with such urgency and how she kept making the hygienist zoom in really close to the teeth and adjust the brightness and contrast in the x-rays until she could find a “cavity” makes me think it was a scam. I wanted to write this review to warn people just in case. I hope the owners of Blacksburg Smiles find a new dentist ASAP because it used to be a great place before and I had no reason to write a bad review.
Get a second opinion before having cavities filled here. I was told in February that I had multiple cavities in each area of my mouth, 4 of which needed immediate attention and my teeth were in poor shape. I was told I should not wait to have the work done and it was urgent. However I scheduled my next cleaning with another office for a second opinion before having cavities filled. The other office found zero cavities, and they used the same x-rays that were taken back in February from Blacksburg Smiles. Get a second opinion.
I would highly not recommend this practice until they restructure. My family has had appointments cancelled last minute due to workers calling out. My son had an appointment to have fillings and it was cancelled and the receptionist said he could not be seen till 4 months later. The receptionist called me the night before my appointment to confirm my 8am appointment, I arrived 10 minutes till 8 to be told the appointment was cancelled due to an employee calling off. Till they find more reliable help, I would not recommend!!
