I got a little nervous reading the laminated welcome packet I was provided just before my first appointment. In it, it said that your insurance may bill more than they originally quote. I quickly brought my concern up to the office assistant and she assured me that my insurance would cover the cost of my appointment 100%.
This visit was drastically different than any other normal “cleaning and x-ray” visit that I’ve ever had. They actually did 2 different types of x-rays (at first I was pleased thinking, ‘wow, that was the least painful x-rays I’ve ever had’, but then, I was instantly given another round of x-rays with the normal bite wings that I’m used to. I asked why I had to do both and was told one was for my teeth and the other for my jaw. Then the hygienist took photos of my face–strange, but ok, fine. Then they scanned my mouth with some blue light. Then, when I thought I was about to start the tooth cleaning, she instead was performing some sort of topographic map of my teeth. Finally, I then got my cleaning and they did a quick polish and then applied fluoride to my teeth.
I was a bit stunned as they gave me like 5 or 6 pages of descriptions of different types of fillings, but I was never explained that I’d be getting all this stuff done to me prior to them sticking something in my mouth and doing it. During my visit, I was informed that I have a cavity, for which I was provided a quote of about $72 to have it filled. I booked an appointment and then a few days before my appointment, I got an email stating that the cost would actually be $178.
I was already feeling like I was experiencing unnecessary treatments at my initial visit, so I canceled the appointment. A few days later, I got a bill in the mail for my initial visit, which I had been assured would be 100% covered. Now I had to pay $60. I called to complain and was told that the fluoride treatment is only covered if I’m under 16 and that was $25 worth on the bill. I was never asked if I wanted fluoride, it was just part of the cleaning as far as I was aware. Why would they apply it without asking me if I wanted it for $25? I can’t be the only adult they are treating. The rest of the bill was apparently costs that my insurance didn’t fully cover. The office waived the $25 for the fluoride and I paid the remainder, but I told them that I felt that they were performing unnecessary procedures to maximize insurance billing. I’ll be looking for a new dentist.
Maybe this place is great if you don’t mind always having a surprise bill, but that’s not my current situation.

I’ve been a patient here since 2018, after my dentist of 20 years retired. Switching dentists can be difficult for some, and it was for me. Dr. Chalmers and Dr. Kanwar made me feel at ease. The office is pristine with state of the art equipment. The professional staff are warm and friendly, and they do an excellent job at keeping me on schedule. I look forward to the next 20 years with this office!
My experience with my Chalmer’s dentist has erased any fear I had. They are truly the best in the world, combining professionalism with friendliness. Thanks to their skillful and punctual care, my teeth feel great with no pain. I’m incredibly satisfied and sincerely hope they continue with us. Their exceptional service makes me highly recommend them as the best Chalmer Dentist in Sacramento.
